Saskatoon AHS
Welcome to STC AHS Growing Spirits Preschool
Operated by the Saskatoon Tribal Council, Growing Spirits Preschool is a vibrant, child-centered space where young learners can explore, play, and connect with their culture. We provide a nurturing, play-based environment that honors Indigenous traditions while supporting the healthy development of every child.
đŋ Culture, Language & Land-Based Learning
At Growing Spirits, Cree language and cultural teachings are woven into the very fabric of our daily routine.
· Language & Tradition: Children are immersed in the Cree language through songs, daily routines, and activities. We also incorporate traditional teachings such as Feast, tipi teachings, and hands-on activities like ribbon skirt making.
· Learning from the Land: We offer Cree language experiences throughout the day, with a strong focus on land-based activities that connect children to nature and traditional ways of knowing.
𧸠Education & Play
We believe that children learn best when they are engaged and having fun.
· Play-Based Learning: Our curriculum is built around a child-led, play-based environment. We emphasize learning through play and exploration, allowing children to follow their natural curiosity.
· Early Literacy: We incorporate specific programming like Moe the Mouse to help build foundational speech, language, and literacy skills in an engaging way.
đ Health, Nutrition & Wellness
The health and safety of our students is a top priority.
· Healthy Habits: We promote daily wellness by teaching and practicing proper hand washing and cough/sneeze etiquette.
· Active Outdoors: Physical activity is built into our day, including daily outdoor play in all seasons.
· Screening & Snacks: ASQ screenings are available for developmental check-ins. We also provide healthy morning and afternoon snacks, incorporating traditional Indigenous foods whenever they are available.
đ¤ Family & Community Support
We know that strong families build strong children. We love engaging with our parents and caregivers through:
· Community Events: Join us for our Fall Feast, Spring Feast, and "Meet the Teacher" breakfasts.
· Cultural Activities: Families are invited to participate in hands-on cultural experiences like skirt making, quilt making, and tipi raising.
· Parent Advisory: We have an active Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) and encourage family involvement in the child's learning journey.
Community Resources: Through our connection with the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC), we can help connect families with vital community resources. These include STC Employment & Training Services (ETS), STC Health Centre (including Maternal Child Health and the Health Bus), Children First, Kids First, PALS, CHUMS, Cross Housing, and the White Buffalo Youth Lodge.
