Welcome to Border City Aboriginal Head Start
â
Located in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Border City Aboriginal Head Start is a vibrant, culturally rich learning environment for children aged 3 to 5 years old. We believe that every child is unique and that parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. Our full-day program is designed to nurture the spirit, mind, and body of every child through daily cultural practices, outdoor exploration, and joyful learning.
đŋ Culture, Language & Daily Traditions
â
Our days are intentionally grounded in Indigenous culture and traditions.
· Daily Smudging: We begin our days by connecting with the Creator through daily smudging.
· Language & Land: The Cree language is used daily, including learning Cree and Métis numbers. We also spend time learning about and placing traditional medicines.
· Custom Curriculum: Our dedicated staff have worked hard to develop a unique, new curriculum that centers around cultural languages. We are proud to offer both language programs and hands-on cultural activities.
𧸠Education & Play-Based Learning
We are currently building out our specific literacy and numeracy programs, with exciting updates coming in the next few months! In the meantime, our focus is on creating a safe, stimulating environment where children can learn through play.
· Physical Development: We believe in active bodies! Children go outdoors twice a day for play. We also practice balance and coordination using a beam and the use of stairs.
đ Health & Nutrition
â
We promote a healthy lifestyle through daily habits and nourishing food.
· Daily Routines: We practice good hygiene through daily teeth brushing and handwashing.
· Healthy Snacks: Children are provided with healthy, homemade snacks. (Note: Details on the specific meal programs are still being finalized).
· Traditional Foods: We love bringing traditional food practices to life! Our programming includes winter ice fishing, jam making, and bannock making.
đ¤ Family & Community Involvement
â
We couldn't do this without our families! We offer family support programs and community events, and we love finding creative ways to get parents involved in the classroom.
· Cultural Bonding: We host monthly activities where families can create together. This includes making ribbon skirts and shirts, and we have a special "Dad make drums" session!
· Community Connections: (We are currently in the process of finalizing our partnerships with other community organizations and support services, and will share those soon!)
