Prince Albert AHS

Welcome to Prince Albert Aboriginal Head Start

Located in the heart of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Prince Albert Aboriginal Head Start is a warm, welcoming community where family, culture, and early learning come together.

Our program is free to attend and open to all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children. We focus on the basics of school readiness, using play and exploration—guided by the traditional cultural calendar—as the foundation of our programming.

(Please note: We proudly offer both an in-house preschool program and a Home Visiting Program for families in our community.)

đŸŒŋ Culture is Our Program

At PA AHS, culture is not just an activity; it is the foundation of everything we do.

  • Daily Teachings: We follow the Seven Teachings, smudge daily, give thanks to the Creator for our food, and learn about Mother Earth and all creations.

  • Language: We teach the basics of the languages relevant to our families, including Cree, Dene, and Michif.

  • Traditional Knowledge: We are blessed to have traditional knowledge keepers attend our program weekly.

  • Land-Based Learning: We spend time outdoor exploring, building on the teachings of Mother Earth and our important job to take care of all living beings and the land. Circle time, land acknowledgments, stories, songs, and dance are woven into our days.

🧸 Education & Play-Based Learning

We provide a supportive, engaging environment that builds a strong foundation for school readiness.

  • Child-Led Exploration: Our "Invitation to Play" setups are thoughtfully designed with the cultural calendar and the children's natural interests in mind.

  • Mealtime Learning: Meals are a wonderful opportunity for learning! Children give thanks to the Creator for their food and learn to thank the cook in Cree, Dene, and Michif. We also use meal times to build language skills through conversation, and we regularly offer traditional foods.

🤝 A Family-Centered Community

We believe that everyone who enters our building has a gift to share. We are deeply family-orientated and include all extended families in our celebrations and events throughout the year.

  • Parent Programs: We offer many programs to build skills for both children and families. Our parent programs include cultural events and skills such as attending sweats, seasonal feasting, beading classes, and drum making classes.

  • Empowering Families: We love seeing families return year after year, creating a strong sense of community. We have watched families become strong advocates for their children, finding a sense of belonging, pride, and confidence in themselves and their culture.

  • Community Partnerships: We have strong partnerships within the community, including Kids First and the Early Years Resource Center.

🌟 Looking to the Future

We are always looking for ways to grow and support our families.

  • A New Home: We have started the process of a new build in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House, with a grand opening expected in the Fall of 2027!

  • Our Goals: We want to continue to support children and families in the best way possible. We hope to find more support for children with diverse needs, and we would love to create a video documenting what Head Start means to our families (past and present).
